IPFS stands for the "inter-planetary file system". It enables files to be stored as if they are in one single global hard disk (hence the name).
Of particular relevance to the Viral Academy are the following attributes:
- Links are permanent (no more missing links)
- No central server
- No denial of service attacks
- Users share their local disk space
These features enable us to construct a Learning Commons, in which Individual Learners, Informal Learning Spaces, and Formal Institutions can share the costs, and freedoms associated with distributing these materials.
IPFS is useable right now for sharing files between institutions. We have developed technology to enable media to be shared between locations, and used in presentation, teaching and lecture scenarios, in a way which enables students or teachers to Fork content and appropriate it to their own context, without losing the permanence of the links to the material.
